Deeper background (2026): The London Gazette records his engineering-officer career — “Thomas William Ashdown (131378)” commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Royal Army Ordnance Corps (Ordnance Mechanical Engineer), 27 May 1940, and by late 1942 a temporary Captain in the newly-formed REME, the corps of the LRDG's Light Repair Section. His MID could not be independently confirmed in the Gazette.
