POSSIBLE DUPLICATE, RECORDED BUT NOT MERGED (2026). This card and the card for “Eves, O.” may be the same man. IN FAVOUR: the initial O fits Owen, and the surnames differ by one letter. AGAINST: that letter is the FIRST one, E against A, which is a larger jump than a vowel in the middle of a name and much less likely to be a transcription slip. The two entries have deliberately NOT been merged. They are recorded here so that the question is visible on both cards rather than buried in a research file, and so that anyone who can settle it — a family member, a nominal roll, a photograph caption — can see what is being asked.

Data note (2026): recorded twice on the source rolls — as “Rfn Owen H. Aves” (Rhodesian S Squadron; SR599036 / RH18000041) and as “Pte O.H. Avoe” (IWM / LRDG Association Nominal Roll, July 1945). “Avoe” is taken to be a mis-transcription of “Aves”; the two entries have been merged here.
Deeper background (2026): a Rhodesian Services Association history names “Rifleman Owen Aves” among the Rhodesian volunteers who reinforced A Squadron of the LRDG under Captain John Olivey in 1944. The article gives no service number, so the identification rests on name, rank and Rhodesian LRDG context.
