Name amended in August 2026 from “Bambury, William Robertson” to “Bambery, William Robertson”. The Auckland War Memorial Museum’s L.R.D.G. Membership Roll of February 1970 gives the latter form against the same service number, NZ #36935, so this is one man and not two records. The portrait held for him was already filed under the Bambery spelling. Source: Auckland War Memorial Museum, “Long Range Desert Group Membership Roll” — the L.R.D.G. Full name William Robertson Bambery. Born 1906; died 8 November 1994. Buried at Foxton Cemetery (Cnr Avenue & Hickford Roads), Foxton, Horowhenua, New Zealand. Sources: Auckland War Memorial Museum Online Cenotaph; Find a Grave.
Original member of the Long Range Patrol (LRP), 1940 — listed with the “LRP” comment in the nominal roll, The Kiwi Scorpions (Brendan O'Carroll).
Surname spelt ‘Bambury’ in the 2NZEF Nominal Roll (per Brendan O’Carroll); formerly recorded here as ‘Bambery’.
Embarkation detail from his Cenotaph record: he embarked as Private, Infantry Reinforcements, 2NZEF Nominal Roll 3 p. 25, Third Echelon. The rank held on this card, Trooper, is the cavalry and armoured-corps name for the same rank, so the two are not in conflict. Source: Auckland War Memorial Museum Online Cenotaph, record 153041.
THE SHARED SERVICE NUMBER IS SETTLED, AND IT IS HIS. The roll carried NZ #36935 against this card and also against Sergeant Keith Banwell of the same section. The Auckland War Memorial Museum Online Cenotaph holds record 153041 in the name of WILLIAM ROBERTSON BAMBERY against service number 36935; a search of the whole database returns no Banwell of that number, and no Keith Banwell of any number. The number is this man’s.
