Deeper background (2026): his parent regiment was the 2nd Battalion, The King’s Own Royal Regiment (Lancaster), confirmed against service number 3708155. He was already a serjeant before the war: the London Gazette lists “Blaze, No. 3708155, Serjt. S.” among men brought to notice by the General Officer Commanding the British Forces in Palestine for distinguished service in operations there between April and July 1939 — effectively a Mention in Despatches.
