What this roll records

THE DATE OF DEATH ON THIS CARD IS CONFIRMED IN PRINT, AND THE NOTICE ADDS THE END OF HIS LIFE. “BOYS, Alfred (Reg. No. 21906, W.W.II, 2nd N.Z.E.F., Cavalry Reg., L.R.D.G.) — On September 21, 1995, at Somerfield House” — THE NUMBER, THE UNIT AND THE PARENT REGIMENT ALL THIS CARD’S OWN, and Somerfield House is a Christchurch rest home. IN LIEU OF FLOWERS THE FAMILY ASKED FOR DONATIONS TO THE ALZHEIMERS SOCIETY, and they thanked the staff and management of Somerfield House “for their care of Uncle Alf during his stay”. He left no widow and no children in the notice: he was the uncle of Janice and Paul Cousins, the great-uncle of Wendy and Ray Williams, of Mark and Jenny (of Wellington, and in Europe when he died), and of Hilary and David Allan, and the brother-in-law of Mavis. Messages went to 19 Roswell Place. His funeral service was held at the Harewood Crematorium Chapel, 507 Johns Road, on 25 September 1995. Embarkation detail from his Cenotaph record: he embarked as Corporal, 2NZEF Second Echelon. The rank held on this card, Sergeant, is his LRDG rank; promotion after embarkation was the rule rather than the exception, so the two are not in conflict.
