*** A 2026 SEARCH RECORDED HIS MILITARY CROSS AS UNREFERENCED. THAT WAS WRONG. *** The award is in The London Gazette, Supplement 37204, page 3962, 2 August 1945, in the Military Cross section: “Captain Paul Newton BRIETSCHE (SR-598208), South African Forces.” The earlier search failed because it was run on the surname rather than the service number, and the Gazette’s scanned text does not reliably return surnames. Recorded so the negative is not believed and the search is not repeated.
Patrol S (S1/S2) INFERRED from Rhodesian/South African service number (SR/RH prefix) - the LRDG Rhodesian & S.African squadron formed S Patrol. Specific S1/S2 not individually confirmed.
