What this roll records
HE DIED ON 21 AUGUST 1961 AT CHRISTCHURCH. The Press carried his notice three days later, and it confirms the route by which he came to the Group: “(Late of Div. Cav. Regiment and L.R.D.G. and Christchurch P. and T. Department.)” — the Divisional Cavalry, which is where T Patrol’s New Zealanders were found, and afterwards the Post and Telegraph Department. He was the husband of Joy Mildred Campbell of Kaputone House, Belfast, and the father of Alistair. Messages went to 221A Lyttelton Street. His funeral left the chapel at 292 Cashel Street on 24 August at 2 p.m. for a service at the Crematorium, Linwood Avenue. THE DATE WAS READ FROM THE PLATE, NOT FROM THE OCR: the automatic transcription renders it “August 2J”, and at magnification, against the 1961 and the 292 set in the same notice, the digit is unmistakably a 1.
