What this roll records

POSSIBLE, NOT CONFIRMED (2026): an “L. R. H. Chapman” — Leslie Reginald Harry Chapman — is the author of “English Grammar and Exercises” (Longman, 1964), which would make a career as a teacher and textbook author after the war. The National Archives Discovery catalogue also holds an item indexed “Leslie Reginald Harry CHAPMAN — dob n/k” (C12046059), which could not be read. The triple given name matches the Gazette commission notice exactly, but nothing ties the author to this officer, so the identification is unproven. Deeper background (2026): commissioned 2nd Lieutenant (dated 15 Aug 1940) as “Leslie Reginald Harry Chapman (150818)” (The London Gazette supp. 35086, p.1149), and by Nov 1942 a Lieutenant (temporary Captain), General List (supp. 35799, p.5142) — his middle name was Harry. THE MILITARY CROSS, WHICH THIS ROLL DID NOT RECORD. London Gazette, 24 November 1942, Supplement 35799, page 5142, under “The Military Cross.”: “Lieutenant (temporary Captain) Leslie Reginald Harry Chapman (150818), General List.” It also gives his forenames in full, where this roll held “Leslie Reginal H.” Source: The London Gazette.
