Deeper background (2026): a Royal Navy officer and a Lieutenant Commander from December 1940, he was reassigned in the spring of 1941 to the Long Range Intelligence Unit of the LRDG. He was awarded the D.S.O. for the beach reconnaissance of Rhodes carried out with Roger Courtney, and two D.S.C.s for the beach surveys that preceded the Torch landings and D-Day; he was promoted Commander on 30 June 1944 and Captain on 31 December 1951.
