HE CAME HOME IN THE SUMMER OF 1944-45 AFTER FOUR YEARS OVERSEAS. Two papers reporting the same occasion in February 1945 — the Wairarapa Times-Age of the 7th and the Dominion of the 9th — record that he “returned recently after FOUR YEARS’ SERVICE OVERSEAS, where he was an officer in the long range desert group”. That fixes his return to late 1944 or the first weeks of 1945 and his departure to about the beginning of 1941. ONE DISAGREEMENT, RECORDED NOT RESOLVED: both papers call him AN OFFICER; this roll holds him as a CORPORAL. Notices of this kind were written from what the family told the paper, and a rank softens easily in the telling. THE ROLL STANDS and the difference is written down here so nobody has to find it twice. The prefix NZ has been added to his service number, on the authority of the Auckland War Memorial Museum Online Cenotaph record already linked on this card — the Museum holds him as a New Zealand service person. The digits are unchanged. This roll formerly left the number unmarked, which made it look like a British number to anyone reading the field rather than the card.
