What this roll records

The service-number field on this card read “Attached”. It is true — Colonel Jean Colonna d’Ornano of the Free French was attached to the LRDG, and was killed at Murzuk on 11 January 1941 — but it is not a service number, and it has been cleared from that field and stated here instead. HIS IS A FRENCH SERVICE RECORD, which is also why he does not appear in the New Zealand or British sources this roll is checked against.

Deeper background (2026): Jean Colonna d'Ornano, the Free French officer who led his men alongside Clayton's LRDG patrol in the raid on Murzuk (Fezzan) and was killed there on 11 January 1941. The Ordre de la Libération records his rank as Lieutenant-Colonel (the roll shows “Col.”).
