*** THE SERVICE NUMBER ON THIS CARD WAS WRONG, AND IT IS WHY HE HAS NEVER BEEN FOUND (2026). *** It read 15889. IT IS 15589 — the two middle digits transposed. THE TEST IS AS CLEAN AS THIS ROLL EVER GETS: searching the Gazette for 15889 together with the surname Davy returns NOT ONE NOTICE. Searching for 15589 with the same surname returns EIGHT. Three of them, in the Gazette’s own words: “Brigadier (temporary) George Mark Oswald Davy, D.S.O. (15589). 3rd The King’s Own Hussars, Royal Armoured Corps” (February 1943); “Maj. G. M. O. Davy, C.B.E., D.S.O. (15589) to be Lt.-Col. 30th Jan. 1944”; and “Brigadier (temporary) George Mark Oswald DAVY, C.B.E., D.S.O. (15589), late 3rd The King’s Own Hussars, Royal Armoured Corps” (July 1945). THE SAME ENTRIES GIVE HIM A REGIMENT AND TWO DECORATIONS HE DID NOT HAVE HERE: 3rd The King’s Own Hussars, and the C.B.E. and D.S.O. His honours field was empty. ONE OF THE 1942 NOTICES ALSO PRINTS HIS HOME ADDRESS. It has deliberately not been recorded: this roll publishes birth and service facts and does not publish where men lived.
