THE GAZETTE ENTRY ALREADY RECORDED ON THIS CARD IS HIS MENTION IN DESPATCHES, AND NOW IT CAN BE NAMED. The note above cites “issue 35396, page 7341, under the regimental heading DRAGOONS: 324990 Lce.-Corpl. A. S. Dennif” — an exact match on the number, but recorded only as an entry against it, because the list it sat in had never been identified. IT IS A MENTION IN DESPATCHES. THE LIST THIS BELONGS TO, IN ITS OWN WORDS. Page 7339 of the same supplement heads it: “War Office, 30th December, 1941. The KING has been graciously pleased to approve that the following be Mentioned in recognition of distinguished services in the Middle East (including Egypt, East Africa, The Western Desert, The Sudan, Greece, Crete, Syria and Tobruk) during the period February, 1941, to July, 1941.” Page 7341 is twenty-two pages inside that list, and page 7362 of the same list carries another man of this roll, Captain F. B. Edmundson. So the Mention in Despatches recorded in this card’s honours field is dated at last: 30 December 1941, for services in the Middle East between February and July 1941. A London Gazette entry against his service number. 26 December 1941, Issue 35396, page 7341, under the regimental heading “DRAGOONS”: “324990 Lce.-Corpl. A. S. Dennif.” The number is exact and “Dennif” is the Gazette’s own scan; the Royal Armoured Corps heading follows immediately below, which agrees with this card. The list’s form — names by regiment with no award set against any of them — is that of a Mentioned in Despatches list, and December 1941 would be the right moment for the earliest of the Middle East ones; but the preamble of that issue has not been read, so this is recorded as an entry and NOT yet as the notice of his Mention. NOTE THE INITIALS: the Gazette gives A. S. where this roll has Alan; the forename stands and the disagreement is recorded. Source: The London Gazette.
