What this roll records

The second service number recorded above, 277662, is a British commission number, and the London Gazette shows him under it in an English county regiment. He is STANLEY NORMAN EASTWOOD (277662): appointed with effect from 10 April 1943 (Supplement 36088, p. 3151, 9 July 1943); “Lt. S. N. Eastwood (277662)” (Supplement 36436, p. 1372, 21 March 1944); “Lieutenant (temporary Captain) Stanley Norman Eastwood (277662), The Buffs (Royal East Kent Regiment)” (Supplement 36679, p. 4053, 29 August 1944); and “War Subs. Lt. S. N. EASTWOOD, M.C. (277662), relinquishes his commn., 6th Dec. 1945” (Supplement 37439, p. 574, 18 January 1946), which confirms his Military Cross. THIS BEARS ON THE PATROL NOTE ABOVE: that note infers S Patrol from his Rhodesian service number, and he turns out to have been commissioned into The Buffs. The two are not incompatible — a man could hold a Rhodesian number and later take a British commission, and the RH number is real — but the inference is weaker than it reads, and the patrol attribution should be treated as unconfirmed. Patrol S (S1/S2) INFERRED from Rhodesian/South African service number (SR/RH prefix) - the LRDG Rhodesian & S.African squadron formed S Patrol. Specific S1/S2 not individually confirmed.
