What this roll records

A REFINEMENT ON THE DATE ABOVE, AND IT APPLIES TO EVERY GAZETTE CITATION ON THIS ROLL. The note above dates his Military Medal to 21 March 1944. THE PRINTED PAGE ITSELF IS HEADED “SUPPLEMENT TO THE LONDON GAZETTE, 23 MARCH, 1944”, and the War Office notice on it is dated “23rd March, 1944”. BOTH DATES ARE RIGHT, FOR DIFFERENT THINGS: the Gazette’s own record gives issue 36436 a publication date of 21 March 1944, and the supplement carrying these awards was published two days later, on 23 March. THE SAME SPLIT RUNS THROUGH THE WHOLE ROLL: the National Archives, cataloguing WO 373 recommendation files, records the ISSUE date as the date of announcement, while the page a reader actually opens is headed with the SUPPLEMENT date. So a citation reading “21 March 1944, Supplement 36436” is not wrong, but it is incomplete, and anyone opening the page will see a different date at the top and wonder which is in error. Neither is. A NOTE ON WHERE THE 21 MARCH DATE CAME FROM: not from his own recommendation file. The WO 373 sweep of 26 August 2026 found twenty-three Long Range Desert Group recommendation files and NONE OF THEM IS HIS — the 21 March date is the Gazette’s own publication date for issue 36436. Recorded because an earlier draft of this very note cited WO 373/46/108 for him, and that file belongs to Thomas James Lewis, a different man of this roll with a different number. The error was caught before it was published. Sources: The London Gazette, issue 36436 (published 21 March 1944), Supplement page 1367 (the page itself headed 23 March 1944).

Patrol S (S1/S2) INFERRED from Rhodesian/South African service number (SR/RH prefix) - the LRDG Rhodesian & S.African squadron formed S Patrol. Specific S1/S2 not individually confirmed.

HIS MILITARY MEDAL, CONFIRMED AND DATED. London Gazette, 21 March 1944, Supplement 36436, page 1367, under “The Military Medal”, for gallant and distinguished services in the field: “No. RH/1095835 Gunner Richard Carroll Edwards, Royal Regiment of Artillery.” It gives his forenames in full and names his regiment; the Gazette prints the number in the same Rhodesian form this card holds.
