What this roll records

CWGC: Signalman Thomas Myrddin Evans, service no. 2356901, Royal Corps of Signals (Long Range Desert Group Signal Section). Died 18 January 1943, aged 32. He died as a prisoner of war, lost when the ship carrying him (believed to be the Italian transport Bombardiere) was sunk. No known grave; commemorated on the Alamein Memorial, Column 51, Egypt. (CWGC confirms service no. 2356901; an earlier record gave 2536901 in error.) Source: Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Captured in North Africa: R1 att Patrol, 27 Dec 1942, Gheddahia–Bu Ngem track. British, attached; killed when PoW ship sunk 18 Jan 1943 (date also annotated 28 Dec 1942). Source: "Names of LRDG NZ personnel captured in North African campaign" (per Brendan O’Carroll).

North Africa — 27 Dec 1942, Gheddahia–Bu Ngem track: died. R1 W/T operator; a Welshman ('Taffy'); drowned when the ship carrying him (probably the Bombardiere) was sunk 17 Jan 1943. His photograph comes from the collection’s master folder, where it is filed as “Evan, Thomas”. The roll holds no man named Evan, the folder’s convention is surname first, and he is the only Thomas Evans on the roll without a portrait, so the missing letter has been read as a slip of the keyboard. Source: the photograph itself, in the collection’s master folder.

Checked (2026): The London Gazette holds no notice under service number 2356901 — the returns are company numbers only. Recorded so the search is not repeated.
