AGAINST: that letter is the FIRST one, E against A, which is a larger jump than a vowel in the middle of a name and much less likely to be a transcription slip. The two entries have deliberately NOT been merged. They are recorded here so that the question is visible on both cards rather than buried in a research file, and so that anyone who can settle it — a family member, a nominal roll, a photograph caption — can see what is being asked.
