He embarked as a PRIVATE with the 23rd (Canterbury and Otago) Battalion in the Third Echelon. His O.B.E. of 1965 gives the service number he held in the British service, which this card did not carry: the citation reads “Lieutenant-Colonel (temporary) The Right Honourable Paul Richard, Baron Freyberg, MC (231225), Grenadier Guards.” Source: Auckland War Memorial Museum Online Cenotaph, record 178154.
Full name Paul Richard Freyberg; born 27 May 1923; died 26 May 1993. Son of Lieutenant-General Lord (Bernard) Freyberg, V.C.; he later succeeded as the 2nd Baron Freyberg.
