What this roll records

Full name Peter Lloyd Garland (recorded as “Petre” on the nominal roll). A shepherd in civilian life. Went overseas with the 1st Echelon in 1939 to Egypt with the Divisional Cavalry; seconded to the Long Range Desert Group until the Greek campaign. After Greece he took an Armoured Fighting Vehicles course and returned to New Zealand in November 1942 as an instructor at Waiouru Military Camp; graded out from a further overseas posting (11th Reinforcements) because of an eye defect. Farmed at Mangamahu after the war. Source: Auckland War Memorial Museum Online Cenotaph.

Verified 27 Jul 2026 vs Auckland Museum Online Cenotaph. Rank Trooper (2nd Div Cavalry, seconded to LRDG). Full name Peter Lloyd Garland; listed as "Petre" on nominal roll.

On original LRP Roll (5 Dec 1940): T — Gnr T Patrol; returned NZ Armd Corps. Source: LRP Roll (Original LRP Nominal Roll as at 5 Dec 1940, Capt L H Browne).

Crewed T Patrol truck 'Taipo'; self-identified (with #1366) in his own hand at the Picton LRDG reunion, Apr 2001, in a signed copy of 'Kiwi Scorpions'.
