Online Cenotaph record found in August 2026 by searching the service number, and it answers the double question mark this roll carried: HIS NAME IS JOHN McCABE GIBBONS. A COMPRESSOR ATTENDANT in civilian life; he embarked as a Private with Infantry Reinforcements (2NZEF Nominal Roll 4, p.128). CAPTURED 14 JULY 1942 — a date this card did not hold — and held at SALONIKA in Greece, at Stalag VIII-B (later 344) at Lamsdorf, and at P.G. 85 at TUTURANO in Italy; of those only Lamsdorf was already recorded here. The prefix NZ has been added to his service number, on the authority of the Auckland War Memorial Museum Online Cenotaph record already linked on this card — the Museum holds him as a New Zealand service person. The digits are unchanged. This roll formerly left the number unmarked, which made it look like a British number to anyone reading the field rather than the card.
