HE HELD THE BRITISH EMPIRE MEDAL, AND THIS CARD DID NOT SAY SO. The recommendation survives at The National Archives, Kew, as WO 373/75/86: “Gregory, Ernest. Rank: Serjeant. Service No: 75053. Regiment: Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers attached Long Range Desert Group. Theatre of Combat or Operation: Italy. Award: British Empire Medal. Date of announcement in London Gazette: 13 December 1945.” The number is exact. TWO THINGS IT ADDS BEYOND THE AWARD: his corps, the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, attached to the Group rather than of it; and the theatre, ITALY — this roll had nothing at all on where he served. Checked (2026): The Auckland War Memorial Museum Online Cenotaph holds two men named both Ernest and Gregory, and neither is an Ernest Gregory and neither carries 75053. Recorded so the search is not repeated.
