THE ONLY ACCOUNT OF HIS LIFE IN PRINT. The Te Awamutu Courier of 11 November 1942, under “ROLL OF HONOUR - EXPEDITIONARY FORCE - LOCAL DISTRICT NAMES”: “PRIVATE CLIFF HARDYMENT. Recently reported missing, Private Clifford H. Hardyment was, before the war, employed on the farm of Messrs Rose Bros, at Mangapiko. He enlisted from Matamata, and went overseas with the First Echelon. He served in Greece, and was a member of the Long Range Desert Group. His mother resides at Marton.” THAT HE SERVED IN GREECE IS NEW TO THIS CARD. The notice was printed eighteen days after the date the Online Cenotaph gives for his death, while he was still only reported missing. *** ONLINE CENOTAPH RECORD FOUND IN AUGUST 2026, AND IT RECORDS HIS DEATH. *** BORN 5 NOVEMBER 1913 AT EKETAHUNA. A FARMER in civilian life. He embarked as a TROOPER of the 2nd DIVISIONAL CAVALRY REGIMENT, and his campaign is given as the WESTERN DESERT. HE DIED OF WOUNDS ON 24 OCTOBER 1942, AGED 28, IN THE WESTERN DESERT — the second day of the Battle of El Alamein. HE HAS NO KNOWN GRAVE: he is commemorated on the ALAMEIN MEMORIAL at El Alamein War Cemetery, Egypt, and in the Auckland War Memorial Museum’s World War 2 Hall of Memories. Until this record was found, nothing at all was known about him on this roll and his death was not recorded. Source: Auckland War Memorial Museum Online Cenotaph, record C20226.

The prefix NZ has been added to his service number, on the authority of the Auckland War Memorial Museum Online Cenotaph record already linked on this card — the Museum holds him as a New Zealand service person. The digits are unchanged. This roll formerly left the number unmarked, which made it look like a British number to anyone reading the field rather than the card.
