What this roll records
REGIMENT FIELD CORRECTED (2026). It read “Highlander ex com RCS” — working shorthand rather than the name of a regiment, and it was showing on the public card. It now reads Royal Corps of Signals, and that rests on THREE THINGS AGREEING: the “RCS” in the shorthand itself; the separate note on this card recording “Corps: R.C.S.”; and his service number 2579777, which falls in the 257xxxx Royal Signals enlistment block used by other Signals men on this roll. His rank of Signalman is consistent with all three. THE WORD “HIGHLANDER” HAS NOT BEEN THROWN AWAY, and it is recorded here because it may mean something: it is not an LRDG truck name (the trucks list was checked), so it most likely records a Highland regiment he came from before transferring to Signals. No source for that has been found, and it has deliberately not been written into any field.
