What this roll records
SERVICE NUMBER AND PATROL BOTH WITHDRAWN (2026). This card carried RH6296770 WITH NO NOTE ANYWHERE SAYING WHERE IT CAME FROM. The same number is the sourced primary number of Harris, William, whose card cites the Rhodesia Nominal Roll for “RH6296770 / M258”. On that evidence the number is William’s and has been removed here. AND THE PATROL HAS GONE WITH IT: this card previously showed S Patrol, but that was not recorded anywhere — it had been INFERRED from the RH prefix of the very number now removed. An inference cannot outlive the thing it was drawn from, and it was showing on the public card as though it were known. NEITHER HIS SERVICE NUMBER NOR HIS PATROL IS ESTABLISHED. What remains is his name and his rank. ONE POSSIBILITY LEFT OPEN: this man and Harris, William may be the same person — the same surname, adjacent ranks, and a forename that is unusual as a forename. That is not enough to merge two cards on, but it is worth recording.
