Embarked/served with 7th Field Ambulance, N.Z. Medical Corps. Served in Fiji with 7th Field Ambulance, then joined the LRDG dropping to trooper; captured on the Barce Raid (Sept 1942); as a POW reportedly escaped 11 times (9 in Italy, 2 in Germany); wrote memoirs c.1975; died 19 March 1981 at Howick Baptist Home, Auckland. The prefix NZ has been added to his service number, on the authority of the Auckland War Memorial Museum Online Cenotaph record already linked on this card — the Museum holds him as a New Zealand service person. The digits are unchanged. This roll formerly left the number unmarked, which made it look like a British number to anyone reading the field rather than the card.
