Full name William Athelstan. Accountancy clerk in civilian life. Embarked/served with 2nd NZ Divisional Cavalry Regiment. Known as Athol; lost his little finger to a sharpshooter at Crete and was sent home. Name incorrectly spelled Athelston in the Nominal Roll. Source: Auckland War Memorial Museum Online Cenotaph.

Heavy Section CONFIRMED: "Sgt A.W. Hood" in LRP Heavy Section group photo (rank corrected from "Heavy Section" to Sergeant). Brendan O'Carroll, "The Long Range Desert Group in North Africa".
