What this roll records

The roll formerly carried this man twice, as “Huggett, Frederick” and as “Buggett” — the same service number, 851113. Both entries already carried a cross-reference note saying they were very likely one man; the two have now been merged, keeping this one because it is the only one of the pair that records a forename. WHICH SURNAME IS RIGHT IS NOT SETTLED: B and H are an easy pair to misread in a handwritten roll, and no source has been found that decides between Buggett and Huggett. THE TWO ENTRIES ALSO DISAGREED ON HIS ARM: this one gives SIGNALMAN and the discarded one GUNNER. Both are recorded and neither is asserted.
