*** THE SERVICE NUMBER ON THIS CARD BELONGS TO ANOTHER MAN, OR THE FORENAME IS WRONG. *** London Gazette, 9 January 1945, Supplement 36886, page 325, under the regimental heading “S. G'ds.”: “2696900 Sergt. F. A. Leach.” The Gazette gives 2696900 to an F. A. Leach of the Scots Guards. This roll’s other Leach, Fred W., carries Rhodesian numbers which the London Gazette does not index and is a separate man, so the question is confined to this card: either the forename Louis or the number is wrong. Given that four other Scots Guardsmen have been identified on this roll, a Scots Guards Leach in the L.R.D.G. is entirely plausible, which makes the forename the likelier error.
