Online Cenotaph record found in August 2026 by searching the service number. BORN 6 JULY 1902; an ENGINEER in civilian life; he embarked as a Private with the 27th (Machine Gun) Battalion. The Museum also holds McLELLAN as an alternative spelling, which agrees with the duplicate roll entry already consolidated into this card. TWO CAUTIONS ON THE DATES. The record’s death field reads simply “1902”, the same as the birth year, which is plainly a slip in the Museum’s data rather than a fact; it has not been carried across and his death remains unknown. And a birth year of 1902 would make him about thirty-eight at enlistment, which is old for a trooper, so the birth date is best treated as probable rather than settled until something else corroborates it. Consolidated with a duplicate roll entry recorded under the alternate spelling ‘McLellan, G.I.’; same man.
The prefix NZ has been added to his service number, on the authority of the Auckland War Memorial Museum Online Cenotaph record already linked on this card — the Museum holds him as a New Zealand service person. The digits are unchanged. This roll formerly left the number unmarked, which made it look like a British number to anyone reading the field rather than the card.
