What this roll records

HIS LIFE, SET DOWN IN FULL — AND A NOTE ON WHERE IT COMES FROM (2026). Jack Mann was the LAST SURVIVING MEMBER OF THE LONG RANGE DESERT GROUP. He died in August 2026, aged 100, and until this entry was written his card on this roll held a rank, a service number and a photograph. What follows is set down because he is the last of them and because he told his own story publicly and repeatedly. BUT IT SHOULD BE READ FOR WHAT IT IS: it rests on newspaper obituaries and a recorded interview, not on a nominal roll, the London Gazette or a Commonwealth War Graves Commission record — the kinds of source the rest of this roll is held to. Each source is named at the end. ——— HE WAS BORN IN CAIRO IN 1925, and that single fact accounts for the thing on this card that never made sense: his service number is in the ME/ series, which was issued to men who ENLISTED LOCALLY IN THE MIDDLE EAST. The prefix is not an error and never was. He volunteered at nearly seventeen, having learned what was being done to the Jews of Europe. He was assigned to the ROYAL CORPS OF SIGNALS and trained as a wireless operator, working Morse at SIXTEEN WORDS A MINUTE. He was fluent in Italian, and picked up more languages later in the Greek islands. THE UNITS, IN ORDER: the LONG RANGE DESERT GROUP in North Africa as a radio operator; the SAS from 1943, after a nine-day parachute course in Palestine; and then the SPECIAL BOAT SERVICE, where he was radio operator to GEORGE JELLICOE in the occupied Greek islands. SOE is named alongside these in every account of him. That is the same path, through the same units, that this roll already records for Stellin — the two men moved in the same small world. THREE OF HIS COMRADES WERE KILLED UNDER HITLER’S COMMANDO ORDER. Afterwards he worked with the historians Saul David and Damien Lewis and spoke in public about what he had seen, including at the Chalke Valley History Festival. HIS BUST STANDS IN THE SPECIAL FORCES CLUB, where he was the only living person so honoured. In his ninety-ninth year he was still laying the wreath at the Jewish Care Remembrance Sunday services. ——— TWO SMALL DISCREPANCIES, RECORDED RATHER THAN SMOOTHED OVER. The press gives his rank as Private; this roll has him as Trooper, and the roll’s own value has been kept. NO DECORATION HAS BEEN RECORDED, because no source reached names one — that is an absence of evidence rather than evidence of absence, and if a medal is known to the family it should be sent in. Jack Mann, the last surviving member of the Long Range Desert Group – a legendary British Army special forces unit – has died aged 100 years. Jack volunteered to join the Army and, thanks to his language skills and experience, he was selected for special operations serving in the LRDG, SAS, Special Boat Service and SOE, and went on to carry out daring missions behind enemy lines across North Africa, the Middle East and Europe. Jack was also a great supporter of the Regimental Association and completed many reunions and trips. Despite his incredible bravery, Jack remained humble to the end: “I can’t say I’m a hero. My job was communications, and that’s what I did. But I tell everyone – my children, my grandchildren – never forget, because war is terrible. I know, because I was in it.”

A NOTE ON THE MIDDLE EAST SERIES NUMBER (2026, revised). This card’s number is in the ME/ series, and so is that of Zuckermann, Jack on this roll — ME/255181 and ME/2551817, which differ by a single trailing digit. An earlier version of this note treated that as possibly a transcription event. IT IS BEING SOFTENED, because the reason for the prefix has since been established: THE ME/ SERIES WAS ISSUED TO MEN WHO ENLISTED LOCALLY IN THE MIDDLE EAST. Jack Mann was born in Cairo in 1925 and joined the Army there. Once that is known, two locally enlisted men holding neighbouring numbers in a small local series is ordinary rather than remarkable, and no inference should be drawn from it. One thing does remain unexplained: the number on this card carries a DOUBLE asterisk, which appears nowhere else on the roll, and what that mark means is not recorded anywhere.

OPERATION POSTMASTER — REPORTED, AND SET DOWN SEPARATELY BECAUSE IT DOES NOT SIT RIGHT (2026). The Jewish Chronicle’s obituary places him on OPERATION POSTMASTER, the 1942 cutting-out raid on enemy shipping in the Spanish harbour of Fernando Po, off West Africa. IT IS RECORDED HERE AS THE PAPER REPORTED IT, AND NOT AS A FACT OF THIS ROLL. Postmaster was carried out in JANUARY 1942 by SOE and the Small Scale Raiding Force; a man born in Cairo in 1925 would have been SIXTEEN. It may be right and it may be a long story compressed into a short obituary. No other source reached names him on that operation, and it has deliberately not been written into any field of this card.
