What this roll records
HIS FORENAME AND HIS REGIMENTS, FROM THE GAZETTE (2026). The card carried the nickname “Mike”, which is kept as his AKA; HIS NAME WAS MICHAEL. He took an EMERGENCY COMMISSION IN THE KING’S ROYAL RIFLE CORPS in February 1943, and was afterwards in THE QUEEN’S BAYS: “ROYAL ARMOURED CORPS. The Queen’s Bays. 2nd Lt. (War Subs. Lt.) Michael MATTHEWS (256093) from K.R.R.C. Emerg. Commn., to be Lt., 20th Sept. 1947, with seniority 26th July 1946.” The regiment field has been set to the Royal Armoured Corps, which covers both his later regiment and the corps he served in; the two named regiments are here rather than in the field because he held them at different times. WORTH RECORDING AND NOTHING MORE: the officer commissioned on the very next number, 256094, was Lionel Nessim Mosseri, a name of the Egyptian Jewish community. This roll has a small group of men who enlisted locally in the Middle East, and that cohort keeps producing such names. It is an observation, not a finding.
