THE MILITARY CROSS, WHICH THIS ROLL DID NOT RECORD. London Gazette, 24 November 1942, Supplement 35799, page 5142, under “The Military Cross.”: “Lieutenant (temporary Captain) Robert Marie Emanuel MELOT (163579), General List.” *** NOTE THE SURNAME. *** The service number and all three forenames match this card exactly, but the Gazette spells the surname MELOT, not Merlot — and Melot is how the histories name him: Bob Melot, the Belgian who served with the S.A.S. The surname on this card has been left as it stands pending a decision; the spelling is recorded here so that anyone searching for Melot finds him. Source: The London Gazette.
THE SURNAME ON THIS CARD HAS BEEN CORRECTED FROM MERLOT TO MELOT. He is Robert Marie Emanuel Melot, the Belgian who served with the Group and later with the S.A.S., and the roll’s Merlot was a mis-transcription that had already been recorded in the notes on this card without ever being made to the name itself. The superseded spelling is kept in the AKA field so that anyone who knows him as Merlot still finds him.
