THIS MAN WAS ON THE ROLL TWICE, AND THE TWO ENTRIES HAVE BEEN MERGED (2026). He appeared both as “Mercer-Nairn, George” and as “Nairn, George M.” — SAME FORENAME, SAME RANK OF CAPTAIN, and both taken from the LRDG Preservation Society’s Troopers roll. WHAT DECIDED IT IS THE MIDDLE INITIAL: the M. in “George M. Nairn” is almost certainly MERCER. A double-barrelled surname written out in full in one place and abbreviated to an initial in another is one of the commonest ways a single man becomes two entries on a roll. THE ARGUMENT AGAINST, RECORDED HONESTLY: both entries come from the SAME source, and a compiler does not usually list one man twice. That is a real objection. It is outweighed here because this roll has already found and merged duplicates within that same source. AND THE GAZETTE COULD NOT SETTLE IT. Neither entry carries a service number, so the method that answered seven other officers on this roll in 2026 — matching the London Gazette by exact number — had nothing to work with. A search for “Mercer-Nairn” returns nothing at all. THIS MERGE IS A JUDGEMENT, NOT A PROOF, and if a source ever names him properly it should be re-examined. The name that was removed is kept as an AKA so that anyone searching for “Nairn” still finds him.
