What this roll records

London Gazette, 26 November 1965, Supplement 43825, page 11199: “D. L. LLOYD-OWEN, D.S.O., O.B.E., M.C. (74596) late Inf., 1st Nov. 1965.” This is the notice of his relinquishing his commission, so the three post-nominals are how the Army itself styled him at the end of his service. It confirms the MILITARY CROSS against his exact service number — which the roll had carried without a reference — and it adds the DISTINGUISHED SERVICE ORDER and the ORDER OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE, neither of which the roll held. Only one notice in the Gazette returns for 74596, so there is no question of another man. Source: The London Gazette, searched 23 August 2026.

AND THE AWARD ITSELF, NOT JUST THE LATER STYLING. London Gazette, 24 November 1942, Supplement 35799, page 5142, under “The Military Cross.”: “Lieutenant David Lanyon Lloyd-Owen (74596), The Queen's Royal Regiment (West Surrey).” This is the notice of the award, dated to November 1942, and it confirms the regiment this card already holds. It is much better provenance than the 1965 retirement notice recorded above, which is only how the Army styled him twenty-three years afterwards. Source: The London Gazette.
