COMMISSIONED OUT OF THE GENERAL LIST, EGYPT SECTION (2026). The Gazette gives him a middle initial and, more usefully, tells us where he came from: “G. V. PAVLIDES (294427) from Gen. List (Egypt Section), 29th Aug. 1945.” THE GENERAL LIST (EGYPT SECTION) WAS THE OFFICER EQUIVALENT OF LOCAL MIDDLE EAST ENLISTMENT, and it places him with the small group of locally raised men on this roll — the ME/ and PAL/ and CY numbers that have always looked anomalous beside the British, New Zealand and Rhodesian ones. A Greek surname and an Egypt Section commission fit that together. ONE HONEST LIMIT: the entry records a TRANSFER, and the unit he transferred TO is named at the head of a list that the scan does not carry into the searchable text. So the regiment field records where he came FROM, which is what the Gazette actually says, and not where he went. Source: The London Gazette, Supplement 37462, p. 897, 8 February 1946.
