HIS MENTION IN DESPATCHES, DATED. London Gazette, 11 December 1942, Supplement 35821, page 5441: “2657293 Sergt. (actg. W.O. II (C.S.M.)) M. J. Penfold.” That supplement is the Mentioned in Despatches list for the Middle East covering November 1941 to April 1942, its preamble on page 5437 reading “The KING has been graciously pleased to approve that the following be Mentioned in recognition of gallant and distinguished services in the Middle East”. He was a SERGEANT ACTING COMPANY SERGEANT MAJOR at the time. NOTE THE INITIALS: the Gazette gives M. J. where this roll has James. The service number is exact, and a 26-series number is a Guards number, which fits; but a forename is not moved on the strength of a pair of initials, so the field stands and the disagreement is recorded here. HQ Section: "Sgt J. Penfold", at the HQ1 vehicle. Brendan O'Carroll, "The Long Range Desert Group in North Africa".
