Three embarkations, from his Online Cenotaph record, where this card carried only the outline. In the war he embarked as a PRIVATE with an Infantry Brigade (2NZEF Nominal Roll 12, p. 155). With JAYFORCE in 1946–48 he embarked as a TEMPORARY LIEUTENANT at Headquarters, 2NZEF Base (Nominal Roll 16, p. 107), for the British Commonwealth Occupation Force in Japan, and appears on the J-Force embarkation roll with the 2nd Divisional Cavalry Regiment, C Squadron (Archives New Zealand R22440245). For Malaya he embarked as a WARRANT OFFICER CLASS 1 with the New Zealand Regiment, 2 Battalion, C Company, British Commonwealth Far East Strategic Reserve, in the vessel Captain Cook. A DISCREPANCY IN THE DATES, RECORDED AND NOT RESOLVED (2026). This card gives his birth as 24 December 1923 and his death as 3 February 1999. That is an age at death of SEVENTY-FIVE. The note above, taken from the Auckland War Memorial Museum Online Cenotaph, says he was AGED 65 AT DEATH. The two cannot both be right. Worth noticing, and no more than that: a death in 1989 rather than 1999 would make him exactly 65, which is a single digit’s difference. NOTHING HAS BEEN CHANGED on that basis — it is a suggestion, not evidence, and the Museum is as likely to be right as the dates are. Settling it needs a death record.
