Military Cross citation — SR598104V Lieutenant Michael John Reynolds, UDF att LRDG (London Gazette 02.08.45): Lieutenant Reynolds commanded a patrol of the LRDG which was landed on the east coast of Istria, near the Arsa Channel, on the night of 23/24 February 1945. Little was known of that area and no British troops had been there before. In spite of most active patrolling by the enemy and in severe weather conditions, he very quickly established observation posts overlooking the channel and the coal mines, and thereafter maintained a continuous and extremely accurate watch. Although the mines were closely guarded by vigilant sentries, a personal detailed reconnaissance of all installations was successfully carried out. The information thus obtained enabled the Royal Air Force to inflict severe damage on the mines. At great risk valuable intelligence relating to coastal and other defences was collected, and quick action by Reynolds resulted in at least five medium-sized enemy vessels being bombed and sunk. At the same time he provided the Royal Navy with quick and valuable information about the movement of enemy shipping and the laying of minefields. As a result of our successful air and naval attacks the enemy made repeated efforts to eliminate the patrol, but cool and courageous action by Reynolds foiled all such attempts. This entry into Istria was kept open, and other reconnaissance patrols were successfully received. In this, as in previous operations, Reynolds showed complete disregard for his personal safety in the execution of the tasks entrusted to him. His courage, determination, initiative and leadership were at all times an inspiration to his own and to other patrols. Source: service record.
