A MENTION IN DESPATCHES AGAINST THIS SERVICE NUMBER — BUT READ THE CAUTION. London Gazette, 4 July 1941, Supplement 35209, page 3887: “C. G'ds. Roberts, No. 2657805 Gdsmn. W.” That supplement is the Mentioned in Despatches list for the Middle East covering December 1940 to February 1941 — the Long Range Patrol’s first operations, Murzuk and Kufra — its preamble on page 3885. *** THE GAZETTE GIVES THE INITIAL W, AND THIS CARD IS JAMES ROBERTS. *** This roll also carries a ROBERTS, WILFRED with no service number at all. The obvious reading is that 2657805 — and therefore the Mention — belongs to Wilfred rather than to James. Nothing has been changed on either card; the question is recorded on both so that neither is trusted in isolation. What would settle it is any source giving either Roberts a service number.
