| Known as | “Fardel” |
HIS FULL NAME, AND A SMALL PIECE OF CORROBORATION WORTH POINTING OUT (2026). The Gazette has him twice: “Denis Harvey PRIOR (126951). Gordon Fardel ROWBOTTOM (126952). William Pearce TOWNROW (126953)” on his commissioning in April 1940, and later as “Lieutenant Gordon Fardel Rowbottom (126952), Infantry”. *** THIS CARD ALREADY CARRIED “FARDEL” AS AN AKA, taken from the LRDG Preservation Society’s Troopers roll. It is not a nickname at all — IT IS HIS MIDDLE NAME, and the Gazette proves it. Two independent sources reaching the same unusual word is as good a confirmation of identity as this roll gets. *** The 1944 entry also gives his arm of service as Infantry. That has been left out of the regiment field, because “Infantry” is a branch and not a regiment, and this roll has just spent a pass clearing exactly that kind of value out of that field. The same entry carries a home locality, which the roll’s filter excludes and which has therefore not been recorded.
