What this roll records
HIS MENTION IN DESPATCHES, DATED. London Gazette, 22 June 1943, Supplement 36065, page 2854: “7884506 Sergt. J. P. Stacker.” The service number is exact and “Stacker” is the Gazette’s own scan of Stocker; the names around his carry the rank “Tpr.”, which is the Royal Armoured Corps section and agrees with the Royal Tank Regiment held on this card. That supplement is the Mentioned in Despatches list for the Middle East covering 1 May to 22 October 1942, its preamble on page 2853 reading “The KING has been graciously pleased to approve that the following be Mentioned in recognition of gallant and distinguished services in the Middle East”. NOTE THE INITIALS: the Gazette gives J. P. where this roll has John. The forename has been left as it stands; the initials are recorded here because the P is new and unexplained.
