FULL NAME, CORRECTED NUMBER AND A CAREER RECOVERED FROM THE GAZETTE (2026). This card read “E.M.” and “#P/226760”. THE GAZETTE GIVES THE NUMBER BARE, THREE TIMES, WITH NO PREFIX, so the “P/” has been dropped; the initials are now carried as an AKA so nothing is lost. He was EDWARD MANNING TOBIN: “ROYAL ARMOURED CORPS. The undermentioned Cadets to be 2nd Lts. 27th Dec. 1941: Edward Manning TOBIN (226760).” He appears in the New Year list of 1948 as “Major (temporary) Edward Manning TOBIN (226760), Royal Armoured Corps”, and two months later as “War Subs Capt (Temp Maj) E. M. TOBIN, M.B.E. (226760), relinquishes his commn, 31st Jan 1948, AND IS GRANTED THE HON RANK OF LT-COL.” TWO CAUTIONS, BOTH DELIBERATE. HIS M.B.E. IS A 1948 AWARD and there is nothing to connect it to his LRDG service; it is recorded because it is a fact about the man, not as a wartime decoration. And the rank field has been LEFT at Lieutenant rather than raised to his honorary Lieutenant-Colonelcy, because that rank was granted on leaving the Army three years after the war. Searching the number returns five notices and he is named in all five.
