What this roll records

ADDED TO THIS ROLL ON 19 SEPTEMBER 2026, BY SPLITTING ONE CARD INTO TWO. He was not found by a new source; he was found inside another man’s record. The card for ALEXANDER “SANDY” VINCENT, a New Zealander of T1 Patrol, carried TWO SERVICE NUMBERS — #16913 and #10560120 — and a note on it had already worked out that the second belonged to somebody else and that that somebody might be missing from this roll altogether. HE WAS. EVERYTHING HERE COMES FROM ONE SOURCE, and it should be read that way: the red-line corrections mark the entry “Vincent — confusion two men” and set #10560120 against ALWYN VINCENT, R.E.M.E., CRAFTSMAN, VEHICLE MECHANIC, LIGHT REPAIR SECTION, the ADRIATIC, and a PARACHUTE COURSE ON 24 JULY 1944. THE NUMBER IS ITSELF AN ARGUMENT THAT HE IS A SEPARATE MAN: #10560120 is an eight-figure British Army number of a kind issued from 1942, where #16913 is a New Zealand number, and a R.E.M.E. craftsman in the Adriatic in 1944 is not a New Zealand trooper who drove at Barce in 1942. WHAT IS NOT KNOWN ABOUT HIM, WHICH IS NEARLY EVERYTHING ELSE: no second forename, no rank progression, no dates of joining or leaving, no photograph — the source records him as having none — and nothing about what became of him. HIS SERVICE NUMBER IS THE THING THAT MAKES HIM TRACEABLE and is where anyone working on him should start. If you can add anything about him and his LRDG service, please email the roll keeper. Recorded from Ian Chard’s red-line corrections to the L.R.D.G. P.S. Troopers roll of 11 September 2026 (LRDG_IanChard_Troopers_redlines_vs_roll_2026-09-11.xlsx), supplied by Tony Moore, and split out on his instruction of 19 September 2026.
