What this roll records
The prefix NZ has been added to his service number, on the authority of the Auckland War Memorial Museum Online Cenotaph record already linked on this card — the Museum holds him as a New Zealand service person. The digits are unchanged. This roll formerly left the number unmarked, which made it look like a British number to anyone reading the field rather than the card.

Photographed directing his .303 Lewis gun against enemy aircraft; the weapon's exposed magazine base could be a disadvantage in the desert, where wind-blown sand could cause a jam, so guns were kept covered when not required for immediate action.

Online Cenotaph record found in August 2026 by searching the service number. A STEEL WORKER in civilian life; he embarked as a Gunner with New Zealand Army Service Corps Reinforcements; and he was known as Tom, which the AKA field on this card already reflects. His second forename has been corrected from EDMUND to EDMOND, the spelling on his Auckland War Memorial Museum Online Cenotaph record. The roll’s form is kept in the AKA field. This card formerly recorded the difference as a variant rather than adopting it; that sentence has been removed, since the name now follows the Museum.
