A COMPLETE CAREER, RECOVERED FROM THREE GAZETTINGS (2026). This card said nothing was known about him. He was a QUARTERMASTER OF THE QUEEN’S ROYAL REGIMENT, and the Gazette follows him from 1941 to his retirement: “The Queen’s R. Capt. & Bt. Maj. (Qr.-Mr.) F. Waspe (50121)” in December 1941; “Capt. & Bt. Maj. (Qr.-Mr.) F. Waspe (50121) to be Maj. (Qr.-Mr.), 6th Mar. 1943”; and “Maj. (Qr.-Mr.) F. WASPE (50121) HAVING ATTAINED THE AGE FOR RETIREMENT is placed on ret. pay, 13th June 1945.” THAT HE WAS A QUARTERMASTER IS THE INTERESTING PART. Quartermasters were commissioned FROM THE RANKS, almost always after long service, which means he was an experienced soldier well before he was an officer — and it explains the otherwise odd fact that he reached the age for retirement in the middle of a war.
