What this roll records

A THIRD INDEPENDENT SIGHTING OF THE PAL SERIES, AND THE HIGHEST NUMBER YET SEEN. The note above confirms the series from two Commonwealth War Graves records, PAL/1156 and PAL/1028, both Royal Army Service Corps. The London Gazette adds another from a different source entirely: in Supplement 36436, page 1367, of 23 March 1944, under “The Distinguished Conduct Medal”, appears “No. PAL/12300 Sergeant J’echel Usher Kasap, M.M., The Palestinian Regiment.” HE IS NOT OF THIS ROLL and no connection is claimed. What he settles is the shape of the series: PAL numbers are written with the slash, they belong to Palestine enlistment, and they run at least as high as 12300 — which places this card’s PAL2627 and Federmann’s PAL/8363 comfortably inside a real range rather than at its edge. CHECKED AGAINST THE COMMONWEALTH WAR GRAVES COMMISSION, 25 August 2026: NO CASUALTY RECORD, AND HE IS NOT THERE. Eight men named Weil and three named Weill are held for the Second World War; none of them is George, and the number PAL/2627 returns nothing. The Commission records the dead, so his absence from it is evidence that he came home. THE PAL SERIES ITSELF IS CONFIRMED BY THE SAME SEARCH: two of the Weils carry Palestine enlistment numbers written PAL/1156 and PAL/1028, both Royal Army Service Corps — which matches Federmann’s PAL/8363, already cited on this roll.
