Mentioned in Despatches TWICE, on 27 March 1944 and on 6 April 1944. The roll previously recorded no honours for this man and his card carried nothing beyond his listing. His Cenotaph record also gives the War Medal 1939–45 with oak leaf, the 1939–45 Star and the Africa Star, and adds a note beginning “He was in the desert deliver…” which has not yet been read in full. Born 27 July 1914 at Greatford; a mechanic in civilian life, and again after the war; enlisted aged 25. Embarked as a Private with 27 (Machine Gun) Battalion, Headquarters, in the Sobieski. Died 17 September 1995, aged 81. Buried at Mount View Cemetery, Marton, in the R.S.A. plot. His name is recorded variously as Roy, Hubert, Hurbert and Herbert. The digits are unchanged. This roll formerly left the number unmarked, which made it look like a British number to anyone reading the field rather than the card.
